Mattes in fcp

Cropping video is quick and easy and – crucially – doesn’t need a re-render. But for picture-in-picture you can only crop to rectangles. I want an oval/circle as a zoom from the layer below. Making a matte for vignetting or any other cut-out look is fiddly, time-consuming and takes forever to render out. I need a solution that gives me a circle without render. Alpha channels?

Turns out the answer is in travelling luma mattes. They are unwieldy and take for ever and can’t be faded into or out of. Top layer = video @ 100%, next layer = b/w image, top layer = video magnified. Apply compositing ‘travel matte luma’. No better than image mattes, and just as long to render out. Back to full-screen magnified overlay…
